LHUCA Literary Showcase (feat. LONDON, SMITH, BLACKBURN, & PROW)
The second installation of Lubbock's newest creative writing reading series took place on November 19, 2015. Kathleen Blackburn, Essence London, Jess Smith, and Katrina Prow shared their work in the Firehouse Theatre in the LHUCA main building.
LINEUP:
Kathleen Dorothy Blackburn was born in 1984 on a U.S. Air Force base in Agana, Guam, and raised in Lubbock, Texas. After graduating from Texas Tech University, Kathleen earned her MFA from the Ohio State University. A Pushcart Prize nominee, her work has been listed as "Notable" in Best American Essays and has appeared or is forthcoming in Bellingham Review, Diagram, Iron Horse Literary Review, McNeese Review, The Pinch, Prime Number Magazine, River Teeth, and elsewhere.
Essence London is a poet who might actually be a prose writer or a printer or an astrophysicist. No one knows.
Jess Smith's work has appeared or is forthcoming in Cream City Review, Sixth Finch, Phantom Books, The Best American Poetry Blog, Lumina, and other journals. She was a Juried Poet at the 2015 Houston Poetry Fest and the winner of the 2013 Red Branch Journal Poetry Contest. She received her MFA from The New School and is currently a PhD candidate in English at Texas Tech University.
Southern California native, Katrina Prow, is a PhD candidate in Fiction at Texas Tech University, where she teaches literature and serves as an Associate Fiction Editor for Iron Horse Literary Review. Her writing has recently appeared in Writing Texas, WhiskeyPaper, Juked, scissors & spackle, CHEAP POP, Literary Orphans, Passages North, and elsewhere. Her story "Cat People" won the 2015 graduate fiction prize from the Texas Association of Creative Writing Teachers. She is currently working on a composite novel about the restaurant industry.
