New Impressions: An International Exhibition of Letterpress Printing

"I push the limits of materials & question human involvement in mechanical methods of reproduction such as photography & letterpress. I am especially interested when the physical process itself reveals part of the concept, such as “pressure” and “pressing.” From the writing on the backs of photographs, to Emily Dickinson’s poetry on scraps of paper (and her extensive herbarium), to manipulating found fabrics and pressing them with other materials in a lens-less scanner, to pressing them again onto fabric or paper with type-high materials in a press bed, to creation from destruction, I flip the power of “pressure,” and actively engage in the verb “pressing.” The word “pressure” implies that someone or some other force is doing the pushing, and in control. I take this power to be an act of holding someone (or something) back. By doing the “pressing” within my artwork, I am actively regaining control and changing the narrative. I love trying new methods & technologies, in addition to traditional printing. Some of my recent research has included the following: pressure printing, laser cut plates, photo-polymer plates, & wood type created using a CNC Router. One of my favorite things to do is take objects & make them type-high. I use the press as a tool, just like the camera."

The Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum is dedicated to wood type preservation, study, production and printing with our collection of more than 1.5 million pieces of wood type and blocks. “New Impressions” is a juried exhibition to showcase exploration and creativity with letterpress printing techniques. From this age-old tradition, we strive to challenge and inspire artists to continue the love of printing. Following exhibition at Hamilton, the show travels to Design College Australia in Brisbane for a one-month display. We are honored to work with our friends there to share this international exhibition more expansively.
Jurors:
Paul Brown, Indiana University – Paul joined the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts faculty at Indiana University, Bloomington in 2000 as professor of Graphic Design following 16 years at Herron School of Art as a Visual Communication professor. His most recent work involves limited edition, letterpress printed bookwork and broadsides. Paul serves on the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum artistic board of advisors and was the museum’s first Resident Artist.
Amelia Hugill-Fontanel, Rochester Institute of Technology – Amelia is associate curator at the Cary Graphic Arts Collection at Rochester Institute of Technology, a library on typographic history. She is an art historian and editor who has contributed to numerous publications about Cary Collection holdings, including those about graphic design, calligraphy, wood type, and typefounding. As manager of the Cary technology holdings, she is responsible for teaching and maintaining some 18 different presses and several hundred fonts of metal and wood type.
Jim Sherraden, Hatch Show Print – Jim is Master Printer, Chief Designer and Archivist at Hatch Show Print, one of America’s oldest surviving show poster and design shops. Since 1984 he has directed its transition from a cultural survivor to a widely recognized graphic design icon and destination for letterpress enthusiasts. Jim serves on the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum artistic board of advisors and is the museum’s current Resident Artist.

Drawing with the Press
This workshop will teach good printing practices in tandem with a healthy dose of experimentation. We’ll use handset type, carved blocks, and photopolymer plates and expand our choices through alternative materials. We’ll build our own type-high blocks and design creative lock-ups in the press in an effort to stay connected to the process and use the press as a way of drawing. To escape the ease and convenience of digital tools and enlarge our material vocabulary, we’ll experiment with alternatives and bring a new voice to the letterpress conversation.

An annual showcase of over 800 exhibitors, AWP’s bookfair is the nation’s largest marketplace for independent literary presses and journals, creative writing programs, writing conferences and centers, and literary arts organizations.
The bookfair runs concurrently with AWP’s annual conference and is open to all registered conference attendees.
