Chinati Weekend, Friday – Sunday, October 9 – 11, 2015.
Highlighting the weekend is the opening of a two-person special exhibition of work by Charlotte Posenenske and Peter Roehr, curated by director Jenny Moore.
Chinati’s entire permanent collection as well as special exhibitions will be open to the public, free of charge, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. Judd Foundation spaces will also be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, free of charge. Related talks, film screenings, sunrise viewing of works by Donald Judd, a citywide “Made in Marfa” event featuring local creative talent, and a DJ dance party by Chromeo are all free and open to the public as part of the celebration.
Made in Marfa
Artists, galleries, and businesses will host open studios, exhibition openings, mercantile events, and performances beginning at 5:00 pm on Friday evening. Maps and a schedule will be available on-line at the Chinati website; printed versions will be available at the museum front office and locations throughout Marfa.
Artist in Residence Openings
Chinati artists in residence Matt Connors and Ricky Swallow will share their work during the Made in Marfa event, with exhibition openings at the Ice Plant and Locker Plant from 6 – 8:00 pm Friday evening.
Special Exhibition: Charlotte Posenenske and Peter Roehr
Chinati will open a new two-person exhibition of work by Charlotte Posenenske and Peter Roehr to the public on Saturday, October 10. A reception will take place at 11:00 am on the Chinati campus, with brief comments by director Jenny Moore, curator of the exhibition.
This is the first major presentation in an American museum devoted to these artists. Working in Germany in the mid to late 1960s, Posenenske and Roehr developed radical artistic practices utilizing new mediums, materials, and processes. Although associated with the minimalist art movement in Germany and the United States, their work evolved in different artistic directions from their contemporaries, including Donald Judd, Carl Andre, and Dan Flavin, artists in the collection at Chinati with whom Posenenske and Roehr exhibited in Germany in 1967. The exhibition reveals two artists ahead of their time, whose close friendship, like that of several of the artists in the collection at Chinati, impacted and influenced their art.
Collection and Exhibitions
The Chinati Foundation will offer free admission to the museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions on Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. The permanent collection includes work by Carl Andre, Ingólfur Arnarrson, John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, Roni Horn, Donald Judd, Ilya Kabakov, Richard Long, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, David Rabinowitch, and John Wesley. Special exhibitions include work by Charlotte Posenenske and Peter Roehr, and a long-term installation by Robert Irwin. In addition, installations by artists in residence Matt Connors and Ricky Swallow will be included.
Lectures
Chinati will host two lectures on Saturday, October 10, beginning at 3:15 pm at the Crowley Theater. Artist Iman Issa will speak on Chinati’s founder, artist Donald Judd, and director Jenny Moore will present on Charlotte Posenenske and Peter Roehr. Reservations are not required.
Support the Chinati Foundation – Benefit Dinner
On Saturday evening, a dinner to benefit Chinati will be held at the Arena. Cocktails will be served beginning at 6:30 pm, followed by dinner catered by Krista Steinhauer and featuring Texas sourced food and drink. Music by Primo Carrasco and David Beebe of Marfa. Dance Party
Chromeo will play a free DJ set on Saturday at 10:00 PM at the Capri. No reservations are required.
Sunrise at Chinati
An early morning viewing of Donald Judd’s 100 works in mill aluminum and 15 outdoor works in concrete takes place on Sunday morning from 7:30 – 8:30 am, followed by breakfast burritos in the office courtyard.
Screening
A screening of Peter Roehr’s work in film will take place from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm Sunday at the Crowley Theater.
Judd Foundation
On Saturday and Sunday, La Mansana de Chinati/The Block, Donald Judd’s Marfa residence with permanent installations of his work dating from 1962–1978, will be open free of charge from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm.
On Saturday only, from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm, Donald Judd’s Art Studio and the Ranch Office will also be open free of charge.
