“To describe my work would be to say that it is both a search and a self-healing effort. Moreover, it is the navigation of the mother and child relationship existing under the umbrella of autism spectrum disorder, a disorder that entails curious characteristics. These include communication barriers, social deficits, obsessively repetitive actions, steadfast meltdowns, periods of erratic sleep and wandering scares. Inevitably these result in relentless tests to the human spirit that begin to materialize as personal narrative within large paintings, embroidery works and small-scale paintings.”

Kelly Reyna was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas. She holds an BFA in Studio Art/Painting from Texas Tech University, that she received in 2011. In 2015, Reyna attended two residencies through Plymouth University - Transart Institute, in Berlin and in New York. She is currently in the second year of the Masters of Fine Arts program at Texas Tech University.

The BORDERLESS event seeks to support RAICES Texas & similar organizations that provide legal advocacy & representation in an immigration system that breaks apart families & leaves millions without pathways to legal status.

Growth of a Foreign Entity is a collaboration between Kyla Culbertson and Nate Collins. Kyla creates alien-like ceramic objects, and places them in real and fake environments. Nathan then photographs them, and digitally manipulates the forms through content aware. They place the ceramics and photographs together in order to construct a new reality for the foreign entities, continuing the growth and production of them. Their collaboration is an exploration in creating a fun and experimental space to navigate.

A COLLABORATIVE VIGIL

Victoria Marie Bee presents "Stitched & Unstitched," a collaborative event featuring a solo art exhibition of new works by Stephanie Berrie, & reading organized by Jess Smith of faculty & students from Texas Tech University.

As a continuation of the vigil we began in response to the events in Charlottesville, "Stitched & Unstitched" will also include a reading by local writers committed to remaining vigilant in the face of oppression & inequality. A range of voices will share poetry & prose engaging our national crises & honoring those who have been & continue to be victimized by it. From 7-8pm, outside of Studio 4, Meghan Giles, Jackie Price, Dima Alhesan, Matthew Porto, Valerie Wayson, Jon Bishop, & D. Gilson will share their work with us. We hope to see you there, and at all future events!

Curators Dirk Fowler & Victoria Marie Bee will be letterpress printing LIVE, celebrating College Radio Day with KTXT 88.1 who will be live broadcasting from the print studio during First Friday Art Trail!

When summoned to speak about the horrors in Charlottesville at the beginning of August, Trump denounced bigotry and violence "on many sides." 

As Jelani Cobb wrote in The New Yorker that same week, "When questioned about the rationale for Trump’s evenhandedness, the White House clarified that both the protesters and the counter-protesters had resorted to violence. This is notable in that the United States was once a country that did not see Nazis and those willing to fight them as morally equivalent. "

Friday, we gather to hold vigil for every life lost at the hands of systematic oppression, racism, and a society that too often chooses to look away. What has happened in Charlottesville is not the death rattle of an isolated radical group. This is the beginning if we are not vigilant. 

Please join us in shared pursuit as we showcase work by artist Patrick Quarm.

Cochran has photographed the Wall of Death riders for many years nationally and has been granted more intimate access than most. With this close relationship, he is able to depict their life on the road and the symbolism of their culture. For many bikers the Wall of Death riders represent everything they wish to be; they make their living on their bikes and are free to roam the country.

As part of the First Friday Art Trail experience, please join us for a provocative conversation on race, injustice, and privilege. We will host a panel discussion that includes a reading of works from various contemporary writers such as Michelle Alexander and Reginald Dwayne Betts. We invite you to engage perceptions of the justice system and all those affected by it. 

In addition to our panel discussion, posters promoting the event will be available for purchase & donations will be taken to support the East Lubbock Community Alliance.
